Several members of the LGBTQ community are part of our CCB team and family. Diversity and inclusiveness are of paramount importance to all in our firm. In support of our firm’s steadfast commitment, Partners Leslee K. Balten and Kyle J. Martelon guided the firm through a workshop regarding these important issues, including but not limited to proper terminology, gender pronouns, and best practices regarding respectful communication and advocacy as it relates to our clients and their children, both in and out of the courtroom.
“It’s incredibly important to help people feel they belong and not just fit in,” Loren M. Brown, Managing Shareholder of CCB, said as he described our collective approach not only to the LGBTQ community, but also to CCB’s team. “It shows respect. We all want to be treated equally no matter how we identify.” Leslee further encouraged all to “be educators, as well as counsel. We may be the ones who are called upon to educate others in the court room, so that vulnerable clients feel safe and respected.” With respect to CCB’s overall approach and sensitivity to diversity and inclusiveness, Kyle concluded “just ask when and if you are unsure how somebody identifies and/or would like to be addressed. It is a conversation that is important to have.” In addition to firm discussions and education, CCB supports the LGBTQ community through active involvement in various community organizations and participation and leadership in Colorado’s LGBT Bar Association.
