No one is immune from being a victim of a drunk driving accident, since even the most seemingly trustworthy people can engage in drunk driving. Early on Saturday, August 8, 2020, a detention officer based in Colorado was arrested on drunk driving charges.
The detention officer, who was off-duty at the time, was arrested on the Highway 34 bypass near Promontery Parkway in Greenly. He was assigned to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office. However, in light of his arrest, a spokesperson for the County Sheriff’s Office stated that they were “working through the termination process” of the detention officer.
Stories like these highlight just how common drunk driving is, and the dangers that these drivers present to the public.
Why and how was the detention officer arrested?
At 1:30 a.m. on the Saturday morning, officers responded to a traffic accident. When doing so, they found a damaged black Acura that did not have any occupants. They then decided to search the area to locate the driver. In doing so, they found the detention officer hiding in marshland. He was identified as the driver of the black Acura, and he was showing signs of heavy intoxication. For this reason, he was arrested on drunk driving charges.
This is not the first time that the detention officer has been in trouble with the law. In 2005, he plead guilty to driving while impaired. Later that year, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.
While this story does not include any apparent victims, other drunk driving accidents can often, and tragically, cause injuries to other drivers, passengers or pedestrians. If you are involved in a collision with a drunk driver, you may be able to take legal action against them to claim damages.
The damages that can be gained from a drunk driving accident include damages for property loss and medical bills. You may also be able to gain punitive damages for the pain and suffering caused. Make sure that you take swift action to gain the damages that you deserve.
