Almost everyone will readily agree that drunk driving is a dangerous practice. The sad truth is that some people think that they have enough skill or experience with drinking and driving to think that they can do it safely. Others just assume that they can avoid enforcement efforts.
Impaired drivers on the Colorado roads cause a lot of increased risk for the community as a whole. Drunk drivers are dangerous not only because they drive while impaired but also because they can go to extreme lengths to avoid the consequences of their actions.
A recent law enforcement attempt related to an alleged drunk driver highlights how impaired drivers can endanger the public.
A recent drunk driving situation endangered countless others
On Wednesday, July 28th, 2021, the sheriff’s office in Larimer County received a report of a potential drunk driver at around 10 in the evening. The department dispatched deputies, and the situation quickly escalated.
The suspect did not want the police to take him into custody, so he fought back. He ended up exchanging gunfire with deputies and was shot but not critically injured. After his transportation to the hospital and treatment, he was later released and charged with multiple offenses. Not only did he endanger the public by operating a vehicle while under the influence, but he also put people nearby at risk by attempting to avoid arrest and then by firing a weapon in a public place.
Drunk drivers often don’t think about the consequences of their actions until it is too late. If you have been hurt by a drunk driver or lost a loved one to an impaired driving crash, holding that driver responsible might require filing a civil lawsuit.
